Dictation in Apple Pages on a Mac

A first draft is the best dictation job there is: you need volume, not polish. Pages handles dictated volume well. The friction comes from two features built for typists, and both take one setting each.

The Pages trap: change tracking marks everything you say

With change tracking on, every dictated sentence lands as a marked insertion. A ten-minute dictation session turns the margin into a wall of change bars, and accepting them one by one is punishment for talking. Before a dictation session in a tracked document, either pause tracking from the review toolbar or accept your own changes when you finish speaking. Leave tracking on only when a reviewer genuinely needs to see what the dictation added.

Substitutions rewrite dictated characters

Pages applies text substitutions such as smart quotes and dash conversion as text arrives, and dictated text counts. For prose that is what you want. If you dictate anything literal, a measurement, a code fragment, a file path, open Edit, then Substitutions, then Show Substitutions and turn off the rules that touch your text. You can manage text replacements in Pages, then Settings, then Auto-Correction.

Dictate a draft

1. Create the document and click where the text should go.
2. Check the review toolbar: if change tracking is on, pause it.
3. Talk in paragraphs. Say "new paragraph" between thoughts and keep going. Do not fix sentences mid-flow.
4. Do one cleanup pass at the end. Editing while dictating is slower than either activity alone.

Where the built-in dictation falls short

macOS Dictation stops automatically after 30 seconds without detecting speech and supports spoken punctuation. A hold-to-talk tool that inserts punctuated text at the cursor can suit long drafts with thinking pauses while working in the same document.
