How-to

Voice typing in Google Sheets on a Mac

Use macOS Dictation to dictate into cells, comments, or notes in Google Sheets.

Google Sheets doesn’t have the same “Voice typing” tool that Google Docs has. On a Mac, the reliable method is to use system-wide Dictation (it types at your cursor anywhere you can type).

Enable Dictation (once)

  1. Open System Settings → Keyboard → Dictation.
  2. Switch Dictation to On.
  3. Confirm your Dictation shortcut (often Fn twice).

Dictate into a Google Sheets cell

  1. Open Google Sheets and click a cell.
  2. Press Enter (or double-click) to edit inside the cell.
  3. Start Dictation with your shortcut (or microphone key).
  4. Speak, then stop Dictation to insert text.

Tip: dictation is usually best for longer text cells, comments, or notes. For short numeric entry, typing is often faster.

Troubleshooting (browser mic permissions)

  • Make sure your browser is allowed in System Settings → Privacy & Security → Microphone.
  • Test mic input in System Settings → Sound.
  • If Dictation doesn’t start, use: Dictation not working on Mac.

If you use Sheets all day

If you want a consistent hotkey workflow (hold-to-dictate) for Sheets and every other app, Voice Type is designed for system-wide dictation on macOS: voice typing for Mac.
