Voice typing in Notion on a Mac

Dictate into Notion with macOS Dictation, or use Voice Type for a dedicated hold‑to‑dictate hotkey that works system‑wide.

Last updated: 2025-12-27

Notion doesn’t need a special voice feature on macOS. If you can place your cursor in a block (page, database cell, or comment), you can dictate using system-wide Dictation (speech-to-text). If you dictate daily, Voice Type adds a dedicated hold‑to‑dictate workflow.

Option A: Use built‑in macOS Dictation (fastest setup)

  1. Open System Settings → Keyboard → Dictation → switch Dictation On.
  2. Confirm your Dictation shortcut (often Fn twice).
  3. Open Notion and click into the block where you want text.
  4. Start Dictation, speak, then stop Dictation to insert the text.

Option B: Use Voice Type (better daily workflow)

  1. Install Voice Type from the Mac App Store.
  2. Choose a hold‑to‑dictate hotkey in Voice Type settings.
  3. In Notion, place the cursor in any text field (page, database, comment).
  4. Hold your hotkey to dictate; release to finalize.

Troubleshooting (mic permissions)

  • System Settings → Privacy & Security → Microphone → allow Notion and Voice Type.
  • Test mic input in System Settings → Sound.
  • If Dictation doesn’t start anywhere, see: Dictation not working on Mac.

Where dictation works best in Notion

Dictation is ideal for high-volume text: meeting notes, weekly updates, specs, and journaling. For quick formatting, navigation, and short edits, typing is still faster — the best setup is often hybrid.
