It can, but it depends. Here’s how to check and how to guarantee offline voice typing.

Last updated: 2025-12-26  macOS Dictation can be on-device in some cases, but it’s not guaranteed for every language/workflow. If you need fully offline dictation every time, use a tool that explicitly runs the recognizer locally.

How to check if your setup is offline-capable

Turn off Wi‑Fi (or enable Airplane Mode).

Dictate a short sentence in Notes.

If it completes normally, your current Dictation setup likely runs on-device for that language.

If it stalls or errors, your Dictation flow is probably using a server path for that language/settings.

How to guarantee offline dictation
